Frequency: the not-so-hidden-law that governs our lives (and how I made it make sense to me)
Physics rules our lives, whether we recognize it or not. (My college-self cringes at this. My buddy, an engineer who delighted in the subject, would come to my physics classes with me just to watch me squirm show solidarity).
It’s how our hearing works. The sound wave travels down the ear canal and vibrates the ear drum, which triggers a series of reactions that end in us hearing the sound.
It’s how our vision works. Light is sent out as electromagnetic waves. As the strengths of the electric and magnetic fields rise and fall, they create a frequency. Our brains interpret the different frequencies, sorting them into to different colors. The interaction of physical light with matter causes us to be able to see them.
Hello all colors of the rainbow!
There are frequencies that are either too high or too low for visible light, at least for the human eye. There are critters that can see UV light. Mantis shrimp and possibly more reef fish— scientists are still studying the fish— as an example.
The higher the frequency, the higher the energy. Think X-ray, gamma, UV rays. Gammas and X-rays have such high energies that they’re able to penetrate through our bodies and create damage without even breaking the skin. Think Incredible Hulk— gamma rays are the radiation emitted by atomic bombs.
Lower frequencies include infrared, microwave, and radio waves. Here, at least for IR and microwaves, the interaction between light and matter causes the matter to heat up.
Which leads to you.
Humans are many things. From a purely physical standpoint, we are comprised of the same essences as light: electricity and matter.
We are electromagnetic beings.
The matter is the easy part. It’s the part of you that takes up space in the world, that if you kick a rock it actually makes contact.
Without diving too much into the biochemistry of it, electricity in our body is what makes our synapses fire, our hearts beat. It’s why AED machines work if your heart stops beating— they’re literally giving you a jolt of electricity to charge your heart back up. It’s how, when you kick said rock, your brain registers this as “Pain! Don’t Do It Again!”
So what does this humans-are-a-walking-law-of-physics look like in every day life?
We’ve all had those moments. Where someone “gave off a weird vibe” or you just didn’t “vibe” with someone.
Or you did resonate with someone, so quickly that it was love at first sight, or at least a very solid friendship.
We’ve all had days where everything is going well for us, that things are flowing our way and we feel nearly unstoppable. A stranger bought you a coffee, you got an unexpected bonus at work, you received compliments on how you looked, even though you’d done nothing particularly special.
Conversely, you’ve likely had days where absolutely nothing went right: your dog got out, you had a fight with your partner, hit the worst traffic on the way to work, and you spilled coffee on your favorite shirt and didn’t have a spare.
All of these days have something in common: Frequency.
If all we are is electricity bound by matter and that’s how we interact with all the other forces around us, the amazing thing is: we can change our frequency.
How our light force interacts with the world is how we perceive it.
(No, I’m not a Star Wars fan— though no shade if you are!— it happens to be a perfect term for this)
Vibrate at a low frequency and you likely are extremely displeased with your life, and are waiting for some external reality to change.
This can sound like:
“If only my boss weren’t such a tool, my life would be great.”
“If I had more money, I’d be happier.”
“If I had a better job/career, I’d feel better.”
“If I just could lose the weight, life would be grand.”
While all of these things may be true, the trouble is you’re outsourcing your life to other, external circumstances.
Control what you can control. It starts within.
Your life, right now, you have created.
The job you have,
How you feel in your body,
The amount of money,
The satisfaction,
The level joy
Are all your creation.
The cool thing is, you can create any life that you want.
You just change your frequency. (The concept is simple, though the implementation may not be easy).
Start with gratitude. It really is a life hack. Find something in your life that you’re truly grateful for. It could be a partner, your children, the flower that blooms just outside your doorstep. Think about it, notice where that feeling arises in your body, and how it feels. Hold onto that feeling. This is high vibin’, good feelings that we want to cultivate. This is your barometer.
A quick aside: I’m not saying everything is all love and light, and that all bad feelings should be shunned. It’s important to feel all the feels, and integrate their lessons. Sometimes we have to walk through the valley in order to summit the mountain.
Using your newfound barometer, move through your life with a sense of curiosity. Where does the barometer dip? Can you pinpoint exactly why? Is there a problem that needs to be solved or a choice need to be made?
You’re in that job, that relationship, that situation because of your choice. And you can choose to change things at any time.
When you do hit those points of low, where the thought spirals and self-pity start to kick in, it’s important to feel the feels, yes, and also know how to pull yourself out.
Some ways to shift your frequency/raise your vibration/pull yourself out of a funk:
- Go. Out. Side. Our bodies are wired for Nature. Birdsong lowers cortisol (the stress hormone), green spaces make us feel better, water puts our minds to zen monk levels. Just get outside. Twenty minutes minimum, notice the world around you from the tiniest ant to the biggest bird you can find.
- Breathe. You can live without food for weeks. You can live without water for a couple of days. You can live without air for only a couple of minutes. Deep, belly expanding breaths get signal to our nervous system that we’re safe. That everything is okay. That there isn’t a massive saber toothed tiger chasing us— it’s just our thoughts.
- Talk to someone or journal. If you have a trusted friend that you can get things off your chest with, call em up. If not (or they’re not available), grab a journal. There’s something about putting a physical pen to paper. Our brains interpret this as the same as actually telling someone, and you’ll feel much better.
- Dance! Do the hokey pokey, shake, swing your hair, swish your hips, just put on some music that moves you and let it flow.
- Play. What moves you? Is it a certain game? Roughhousing with your children? Tickle wars with your partner? A specific hobby? Go do it.
You have the unique ability to create a life that lights you up, that fuels your fire. It may not be sunshine and rainbows all the time, but the amazing thing is by first tuning in and then moving it out, you have the unique ability to change your frequency. And you can do it at any time, for free. To quote Captain Planet, “The Power is Yours!”
