Should and Why to Remove it From Your Vocabulary
Stop “shoulding” all over yourself.
I tell my clients this a lot.
“Should” is one of those insidious little words that worms its way into our vocabulary and buries into our subconscious creating all kinds of guilt patterns.
It’s gross and unhelpful and needs to stop.
“I should exercise more”
“I should figure it out.”
“I should be involved.”
“I should eat better.”
“I should know more.”
🤮🤮🤮
How does any of the above make you feel?
Great? Excited? Ready to tackle things?
Probably not. More likely, you feel weighed down, confused, dejected.
“Do or do not. There is no try.”
Commit or don’t. It’s your life, you get to make the rules.
You haven’t done the thing you’re “shoulding” yourself over because it’s not a priority.
Other things are going on in your life that have taken center stage.
AND THAT’S OKAY!
You’ve got two options when it comes to anything in your life:
Make it a priority. So you can choose to make the thing you’re “shoulding” yourself over a priority. You’ll likely need to let something else go in order to fit this into your life.
This will sound like:
“I am committed to that project, and am setting aside time to make it happen.”
“I’ve already set my alarm for my morning walk.”
“I’ve been researching this topic, and I plan to do more!”
OR
You let it go. You tell yourself or whoever you’re talking to “it’s something that’s interested me, but it’s not a priority right now. Maybe in the future.”
The end.
And you get to live in a world without stepping in your own “should.” 💩
I’m curious, have you “shoulded” yourself lately? Leave a comment & let me know what insidious thought pattern you’re taking hold of or letting go. 👇
